What is trauma therapy and how does it work?

Trauma therapy uses evidence-based, protocol-driven approaches to help people process, understand, and deal with distressing experiences. It’s about more than talking through events. Therapy aims to help uncover how trauma can be stored in the body and mind, while reducing the grip that it can have our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

How do I know if what I experienced counts as trauma?

Trauma is defined by its impact. Experiences that result in things like persistent anxiety, intrusive memories, emotional numbness, or a changed sense of safety are just some of the results of trauma. Regardless of whether an experience feels “serious enough”, therapy is a safe place to explore and better-understand on your own terms.

What is the difference between trauma and PTSD?

Trauma refers more broadly to emotional responses to deeply distressing experiences. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is a clinical diagnosis for trauma responses that persist and significantly interfere with daily functioning. People experiencing trauma, as well as those specifically diagnosed with PTSD, can both benefit from therapy as a form of processing, understanding and building coping skills to help navigate the world around them.

Can therapy help with trauma from accidents or workplace injuries?

Yes. Accidents and injuries are a primary source of trauma and PTSD. The purpose of therapy is to help address not just the memory of the event, but the hyper-vigilance, avoidance, and disrupted sense of safety that can often follow.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Therapy is an ongoing process. It does not promise fixed timelines, or even specific outcomes. Often, when people ask this, they’re really asking, “when might I see or feel a difference?”. Unfortunately, it depends. For some, starting therapy is a meaningful-enough first step that produces those first feelings of change. For others, noticeable change may take longer, and it’s possible that the outcome they seek will remain out of reach. That’s where having a therapist you trust becomes especially valuable: someone who can help to adapt the approach, and recommend additional options when needed.
